What do life and health agents do?

Life and Health Insurance Agents will spend time getting to know their clients to assess their customer's needs. Agents would typically recommend several policy options to clients so the clients can select the one that best suits their needs. In addition to soliciting business, agents must maintain accurate records and they help their clients settle their insurance claims.

Insurance is a highly competitive industry. Some agents purchase a book of business but usually they will need to find their own clients, and to keep those clients. Some agents work directly for a specific insurer (captive agents), while other agents work with multiple insurers (brokers). Most agents and their staff also collect premium payments.

Insurance fraud

Insurance fraud occurs when a claimant attempts to obtain some benefits to which they are not otherwise entitled, or when an insurer knowingly denies some benefit that is due to an insured. Insurance fraud is a significant problem, which causes insurance premiums to be much higher than they would otherwise need to be. The insurance industry is highly regulated to attempt to combat this, and insurance agents are expected to be the first line of defense. Agents must be trustworthy, and ethical.

Insurance licensing and continuing education

Once you have decided this sounds like a good career path for you, you will need to get licensed. All states require the passing of the state licensing exam. The course to pass your life and health insurance licensing exam will include Life and Health insurance fundamentals and state-specific insurance laws and regulations. In addition insurance agents are required to fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check. After passing the licensing exam you will apply for your license. No business can be transacted without a valid license.
